Castle La Crosse Bed and Breakfast
About The Castle
There is a lot of history in the Castle of La Crosse, located in beautiful Wisconsin. So much so that we would love to share some of it with you!
Originally designed and built for Nymphus B. Holway, a lumber baron, by Schick and Stolze of La Crosse in 1891, this three story home was built as a frame house in the Queen Anne style.
The following year, the three-story, gable-roofed home was made more fashionable by the addition of stone facing, resulting in the overlay of Romanesque qualities seen in the house today.
Unfortunately for Mr. Holway, he died before the house was completed. His widow, Jessie Holway, lived there instead. The Holway family continued to be involved in the La Crosse lumber industry, running a large sawmill on the bank of the Black River.
Today, the "Castle" is important as a long standing architectural landmark, notably significant as the only mansion left in the City exhibiting massive Romanesque influence.
Castle La Crosse is now a grand bed and breakfast featuring numerous bedrooms with private luxury baths, finely carved fireplaces, beautiful leaded and stained-glass windows, a library, and a music room.
